Improving Latino Health Outreach in Montgomery County

Latino Health Initiative (LHI)

Organization Overview

The Latino Health Initiative (LHI), a program of the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services, is dedicated to improving the quality of life for Latinos in Montgomery County by addressing health disparities through innovative programs, education, and community outreach. LHI provides culturally relevant resources to promote health and well-being among Latino families.

Challenge

In 2024, LHI sought to increase awareness of prevalent health issues affecting the Latino community while promoting its key programs, including “Asthma Management” and “Let’s Take a Green Step.” The goal was to engage Latino families through accessible, culturally relevant information by creating and distributing digital content to promote LHI’s programs.

Approach

Communications Shop developed a comprehensive, multilingual campaign to educate the Latino community on health risks and available resources. The strategy focused on digital engagement and strategic media partnerships to maximize outreach.

Key Strategies Included:
      • Social Media Content: Created and distributed graphics and carousels, reels, and short educational videos to promote various LHI programs on social media. The reels focused on key health topics, including COVID-19, the Healthy Babies program, the HPV vaccine, environmental health, Zumba, and diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, engaging the Latino community with informative and culturally relevant content.
      • Media Partnership: Partnered with Univisión to produce informational segments on COVID-19, respiratory diseases, the Healthy Babies program, and the HPV vaccine, broadcasted on Despierta América and Univisión Digital, where they achieved over 150K impressions.
      • Asthma Awareness: Developed animated videos for LHI’s Asthma Management program to complement educational presentations for parents of children with asthma, ensuring clarity and engagement.
      • Event Promotion: Developed targeted promotional materials for LHI’s annual Ama tu Vida, Ama tu Herencia event, including graphics, video,  radio PSA, and printed assets to drive participation and awareness.
      • Hispanic Heritage Month Campaign: Launched a dedicated mini-campaign to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, highlighting LHI’s commitment to Latino health and cultural pride.
      • Community Resource Development: Designed and printed calendars for 2025 to serve as an informative tool for Latino families.
      • Fentanyl Awareness: Launched a targeted campaign addressing the dangers of fentanyl, featuring a testimonial from a Latina mother graphics, and reels to inform parents on prevention and early detection.
