Bridging Cultural Gaps and Empowering Diversity at University Town Center, PGCC

Prince George’s Community College (PGCC) – University Town Center

Challenge

University Town Center Prince George’s Community College (PGCC) aimed to strengthen its connection with the diverse Latino and African communities in its area. Many students faced language barriers, unfamiliarity with academic resources, and uncertainty about immigration-related policies. The challenge was to develop a welcoming, informative, and inclusive communication strategy that truly resonated with these communities.

To bridge this gap, PGCC partnered with Communications Shop to create a campaign that ensured all students—regardless of background—felt supported in their academic journey.

Solution

Crafting a Welcoming Campus Narrative

In the first phase, Communications Shop developed a video call-style campaign featuring PGCC students and staff. These videos highlighted firsthand experiences, reinforcing the college’s commitment to inclusivity.

To amplify this message, we also created:

      • Flyers, posters, and social media graphics to expand reach across multiple platforms.
      • Targeted outreach materials that reflected the college’s diverse student body.
      • Bilingual messaging to ensure accessibility for both Latino and African community members.
Multilingual Video Series for Student Support

Building on the success of Phase 1, Communications Shop launched a three-part video series in Spanish, English, and French, providing essential student resources:

      • Academic Success & Well-being Video – Offering practical tips to help students navigate their academic journey while maintaining their well-being.
      • DACA Myth-Busting Quiz Video – Addressing common misconceptions about the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, ensuring students had accurate and accessible information.
      • Navigate Platform Tutorial – A step-by-step guide to help students register for courses with ease, simplifying the enrollment process.

By prioritizing multilingual communication and culturally relevant storytelling, Communications Shop helped PGCC create a more inclusive and student-centered experience.

Impact

With Communications Shop’s innovative and empathetic approach, PGCC successfully:

      • Strengthened engagement with Latino and African students, fostering a more inclusive learning environment.
      • Developed culturally relevant and accessible content in multiple languages, breaking language barriers.
      • Improved student understanding of academic resources, increasing their confidence in navigating college life.
      • Expanded outreach through strategic multimedia campaigns, maximizing impact.

By combining storytelling, digital engagement, and multilingual accessibility, Communications Shop empowered PGCC to become a more welcoming and vibrant academic space for all students.
